About Me

My photo
She is as deep as an underground tunnel and bright like a full moon on a warm summers night. Her purpose in this world is to challenge the impossible and conquer the undefeated. The world is her fortress and its satiny caress leads her through her life's journey. Embrace her, for her soul is but an open book, a mystical adventure waiting to be discovered...

More Life

On 7/7/16 we woke up at the crack of dawn to be guests on the day time game show, Let's Make A Deal with Wayne Brady. I was not a fan of being on national television but I am a team player. It turned out to be a very memorial experience. My bestie enjoyed her birthday and enjoyed the special surprises that came with it. I never made a big deal about birthdays until I began to lose people who I was very close to. The older I get the more I learn to appreciate what I term "remarkable life moments". I remember my Mom and all of the life lessons she taught me. Never in a million years would I ever imagine approaching my 31st birthday and Mommy Maggie no longer be a phone call away. Another wife, mother, sister, daughter, and friend lost to complications with breast cancer. I remember dancing on the beach with Tonisha Bell Alston and Jamison Carter only two years ago at 2am in the morning, knowing that would probably be the last memoriable moment I would have with Tonisha. She died just a few days shy of her 36th birthday due to complications from Synovial Sarcoma (soft tissue cancer). I will never forget the fun we had and how it felt to celebrate Tonisha's birthday, this time without her. Life is short. Happy Birthday Lakeena Alexander!! Cheers to more life and even more remarkable memories. After spending all morning and most of the afternoon on the game show set, we all were extremely famished. We came back to the hotel to change out of our costumes and headed to Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles. That waffle though!! I didn't even bother to take a picture of the food, that's how fast that waffle and those succulent chicken wings disappeared from my plate. Zero time to waste for matters of the stomach.
As we left Roscoe's and were heading to the car, a homeless man saw that my friend had a take out cup and asked her for it. He came and got the cup from her and walked off drinking, out of her straw. Wow! The homeless population is the worse I have ever seen in California, Los Angeles, in particular. My friend travels to the west coast a lot for work and always talks about Skid Row. She describes this area of LA as the homeless capital of the city. When she first witnessed Skid Row, she mistaked it as a block party. There were that many homeless men and women congregated in one area. Being from a place where everyone knows each other and/or every other person is your cousin, everyone had a place to lay their heads at night (indoors), no matter how much you saw them hanging out on the corner looking homeless. I never saw a homeless person until I moved to Atlanta for grad school. Talk about a reality check.
We ended the evening at Skyspace, LA. We had a first class look at the city from the view inside one of the skyscraper buildings. We were able to experience the latest technology and took pictures from the buildings balcony. The talk of Skyspace was the slide that we could take that would take you one floor below. It was a clear tube that provided a view of the city as you slid down. It lasted for about .5 seconds, very cute. What a beautiful city, so long Los Angeles. Santa Barbara, we're coming for ya!

That's Law

We started day two with brunch at a cute spot by the name of Cafe 21. The food was delicious. Everything was fresh and lots of thought was put into the presentation. I indulged in the eggplant sandwich and a fresh mixed green salad with a watermelon and strawberry dressing. After eating ourselves silly, we decided to take a walk and further explore San Diego. First stop Ross! A very fancy shop that very few have heard of.
After squeezing in some shopping we relaxed for a bit and went out again to explore Old Town San Diego. This led us to La Jolla where we stood on a cliff and witnessed the most beautiful view of San Diego. It smelled strong of raw seafood and we could hear the sounds of very large sea lions sunbathing on rocks next to the cave below the cliff. I find it interesting that there were large signs that spoke of the dangers of the cliff, however this didn't stop parents from letting their spawns run wild. We took in the sights and hopped in the car to the next adventure!
Apparently Nobu has been mentioned in Drake and Future's song and we saw it on an episode of the Kardashian's, so we decided to check it out. It was cool... the tempura shrimp sushi roll was delicious but the popcorn and taco's we had when we left were even better. After dinner we went to Were Wolf and sang Mary J. Bilge's Real Love at the top of our lungs in honor of karaoke Tuesday.
In the midst of celebrating life, we received word of another life taken at the hands of another human. My friends and I watched the video in utter disgust and sadness. That could have been a male member in either of our families. How do we learn to tolerate differences? Why are we so obsessed with everyone else, justifying our reason to hate who and what we don't understand? We all went to bed with prayers of hope for our black kings.
On day three we left San Diego in route to Huntington Beach where we got to experience Ruby's Diner. There were hundreds of people enjoying the beautiful weather and emerald green waves. Next stop Bicylce Resort and Casino in Los Angeles...
No matter what it looks like, we have to live in our purpose and enjoy life while doing it. That's law.

In Route to Highway Thirty One

Today marks the start of an eight day tour of California. What I appreciate most about a vacation is my ability to observe freely. On the way to the airport I was able to appreciate the stillness of the island in the "wee" hours of the morning. No traffic. No noise. No worries. As I entered the airport, such a place of adventure, I saw very large and ashy feet, found myself in between strangers who thought it was normal to exchange food across my lap, was forced to endure the randomness of people entertaining themselves with yoga less than a feet away from me, and had the pleasure of witnessing a fellow passenger have a near panic attack. There goes my precious moments of introspection...
Why do I get the feeling that it will get better from here? Every now and then I just need a greater level of adventure. My goal in life is to live. Not wish and dream about what I shoulda', coulda', or woulda' done if I had this or didn't have that. People are literally dropping like flies around me and though it's disheartening, I am learning more everyday just how abbreviated this thing called "life" is.
My bestie and I always wait until the absolute last minute to plan our "birthday trip". Welp, not this year, we planned ahead for our shenanigans and to make things even more interesting, we opened the invitation up to two other great friends! Girls trip!! If I have learned nothing from this chica, I have learned to never sell myself short in making memories.
We will visit San Diego for the first two days of the tour and move on to Hunting Beach on Wednesday. This will be my second trip to the West Coast. Flying in, I got a glimpse of the mountain tops and looked down to see almost aqua blue water in its natural design. I love visiting a new city and seeing everything that its famous for, along with hidden secrets that locals may share. Luckily, our hotel is in the Gaslamp Quarter which is surrounded by great eateries, shopping, bars/pubs, supermarkets, and all that falls in between. All within walking distance.
Today being the 4th of July Holiday, let's just say we got to see some pretty interesting displays of patriotism! The best part of the evening was going down to the marina to see the amazing display of fireworks. There was a green area in front of the water where people sat on blankets, had picnic baskets, and enjoyed each other's company in cue for the 20 minute firework show to begin. It was worth the sacrifice. I haven't seen that many fireworks, well... never. I always enjoy observing people just relaxing and appreciating the times where all seems well with the world as we know it. Like the rose that grew in the middle of concrete, there is hope for better days.
After fireworks we walked around the city for a night cap and were lured in by the sounds of the 90's. A time when neither of us were in college (smiles). We were creative and used the nostalgia to reminisce on the times we were old enough to attend college and revel in its social pleasantries. Where does the time go?!
What a day! I think we were all asleep before our heads even touched the pillows. Not bad for a first day! May the good times keep rolling in!
